Mastering is the final step of the recording process, performed after the recording is mixed and before the product is sent to be pressed. Without this step, the mix sounds inferior in volume, sound, and consistency to other production recordings.
This step serves several purposes:
1. Mastering brings the volume of the mix up to a listening level that is consistent with other radio/produced recordings. In addition, compression is typically applied to the mix during the mastering process to unify the mix and allow all instruments to be heard at similar intensity.

2. Mastering ensures the mix will sound the same on different listening devices-i.e. your recording will sound the same on headphones, a boombox, computer speakers, a car stereo, home stereo, etc.
3. Mastering is the last place that EQ can be used to correct problems or enhance the sound across the whole mix. Problems such as resonances, or frequencies that can become tiresome to the listener's ear can be found and corrected here.

4. Mastering can also smooth out differences in sound between songs mixed at different times or at different studios.
